A Day to Celebrate Our Freedom

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress declared the 13 American colonies “free and independent states.” This Declaration of Independence was clearly a revolutionary—and dangerous—proposition. Realizing the gravity of what they had done, Benjamin Franklin quipped, “We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.”

Fifty-five delegates eventually signed this bold declaration “with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence.” Realizing the great cost of winning and sustaining liberty, they wrote, “We mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

I’m so grateful to live in a land where there’s freedom to worship the Lord and preach His Gospel message.

Even in countries where political and religious freedoms are still alive, it’s vital for Believers to make sure they’re enjoying the spiritual liberty available in Christ. Paul writes, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1).

My prayer for you today is that you will give yourself wholeheartedly to Jesus and discover “the glorious freedom of the children of God” (Romans 8:21).

God bless you!
